چکیده

Organic farming is rapidly growing due to its perceived potential for producing higher nutritional quality. However, studies of organicallyand conventionally-grown crops have not always shown differences between the systems. The objective of this research was to compare the antioxidant activities of organically-grown tomato to those from a conventional production system during postharvest cold storage. “Tub Tim Dang” tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruit were harvested at the breaker stage of maturity from both organic and conventional farms. Fruit were cold-stored at 10 ◦C for 20 days, and samples were collected at intervals to measure the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities, and total antioxidant activity by the 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The activities of SOD, CAT and APX of organic tomato fruit did not differ from those of conventional fruit during cold storage. In addition, there was no effect of production system on FRAP activity. In contrast, DPPH activity of organic tomato fruit was lower than conventional fruit through 10 days of cold storage, but it was higher at 15 and 20 days. These results indicated that organic production did not have a significant effects on these antioxidant traits of tomato.

The influence of organic and conventional cultivation systems on the nutritional value and content of bioactive compounds in selected tomato types.

BACKGROUND Tomato fruits contain a high level of antioxidants such as vitamin C, polyphenols (including flavonoids), and carotenoids (such as lycopene and β-carotene). Some studies have shown the higher level of bioactive compounds in organically produced tomato fruits compared to conventional ones, but not all studies were consistent in this respect. The levels of carotenoids and phenolics are...

Effects of foliar spraying kinetin on growth parameters and photosynthesis of tomato under different levels of drought stress. Maryam Niakan* and Alireza Ahmadi

The effects of 2 concentrations of kinetin, i.e., 2 and 4 mM together with 2 levels of drought stress, i.e., moderate (35% soil saturation capacity) and severe (20% soil saturation capacity) were investigated on the growth parameters of tomato including fresh and dry leaf weight, leaf number, leaf surface area, fruit number, fruit weight, and enzymatic antioxidants. To this end, first tomato pl...

Qualitative and nutritional differences in processing tomatoes grown under commercial organic and conventional production systems.

Organically grown products experienced a doubling in percent penetration of organic sales into retail markets during the period from 1997 to 2003; however, there is still a debate over the perceived quality advantage of organically grown fruits and vegetables. In a study focusing on commercial production of processing tomatoes, samples were analyzed from 4 growers with matched organic and conve...

The Effect of Humic Acid and Amino Acid Organic Fertilizers on Growth of Greenhouse Tomato Fruits Harvested at Four Growth Stages

Due to ever increasing greenhouse cultures, using organic fertilizers for enhancing healthy products is necessary. To investigate the effect of two types of these fertilizers on tomato, in a factorial experiment, based on completely randomized design with 3 replications, with 2 pots in each replication, 0 g/kg humic acid (Humic0) and 1 g/kg (Humic1) and amino acid at 3 levels of 0 g/kg (Amin0),...
